Gutter and Downpipe Replacement

Gutter replacement is the removal of old gutters and their replacement with new gutters, brackets and outlets, often with new downpipes at the same time. Gutter replacement in Hobart applies to eaves gutters on houses and box gutters on commercial buildings. Downpipes carry the water from the gutters to the stormwater drain.
How gutters fail
Gutters rust from the inside, where leaves and dirt hold water against the metal. Joins and corners open up, brackets rust or pull away, and a gutter that has sagged loses its fall towards the outlet, so water sits in it.
Blocked gutters overflow. On many houses the water then spills over the back edge of the gutter, into the eaves and down behind the fascia.
Damage to fascias, eaves and walls
Water spilling behind a gutter soaks the fascia board and the eave lining. Timber fascias rot, and linings sag or stain. Water running down the face of the wall stains it and can get into the wall cavity, and water pooling at the base of the wall wets the footings.
Blocked and undersized downpipes
A downpipe that is blocked, split or has come away from the stormwater pipe drops water at the base of the wall. Blockages usually form at the gutter outlet or at the bends. A downpipe that is too small for the roof area it drains can overflow at the gutter in heavy rain even when it is clear.
Why are box gutters different?
A box gutter sits inside the roof line, between a roof and a parapet or between roof sections. When it overflows, the water goes into the building. A box gutter needs a clear outlet and an overflow, and a rusted box gutter is usually replaced along with the flashings on each side of it.
Brackets and fall
An eaves gutter hangs from brackets fixed to the fascia. The brackets set its fall, the slight slope that carries water along the gutter to the outlet. When a gutter loses its fall, water sits in it and the metal rusts from the inside.
New gutters are set to fall towards their outlets, and extra outlets and downpipes can be added where a long run of gutter needs them.

Why does a downpipe overflow when it is not blocked?
